EMDR

Most people believe that trauma only occurs in a war zone or a horrific event. While it is certainly true that PTSD and/or panic attacks can be a result of those situations, it is not the only trauma we experience. The truth is that people respond to all kinds of situations with unresolved feelings of shame or guilt. These feelings are difficult to resolve. EMDR is an evidenced based treatment option that helps people resolve issues that other talk therapy cannot. People seek this type of treatment regarding grief, witnessing someone overdose, divorce, loss of a loved one, sudden loss of a job, and other sudden disruptions in life.

frequently asked
questions

What is trauma?
Traumatic events in our life are defined as an event that puts our life or a loved one’s life in danger. This can include being in a situation where you witness someone else in danger for example, a car crash, a robbery, or a house fire. This is typically referred to as PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders characterized by nightmares, flashbacks, and intense physical reactions. We also know that situations that change the way we think about ourselves in a negative way and change our interactions with others are considered emotional trauma.
What is EMDR?
This therapeutic model is presented on evidenced based, scientific research and methods called Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. Using specific protocols, a practitioner guides the client thru memories/thoughts (prefrontal cortex) while engaging feelings (emotional center) of the brain.
How is EMDR different than normal therapy?
EMDR can be very effective in addressing negative thoughts and emotions in a shorter period of time than classic therapeutic sessions. Clients that struggle with acute panic responses can learn to self regulate these responses quickly. Clients have also reported not having to “report to the therapist” or “know what to say to get better” identify feeling less pressure with this model of therapy.
What if I don't want to relive some very painful moments?
EMDR can be very specific about a thought/event or be set up as more exploratory about a person’s experiences. Each client will set up the protocol with the practitioner so that the goal of the client is clear. The first part of starting this type of treatment is identifying strengths, positive responses to feeling anxiety/fear, overwhelmed and only progresses when the client feels comfortable.
Is EMDR used only for trauma?
NO! EMDR can be used for a variety of ways. It has been shown to be effective in reinforcing positive thoughts and feelings too! We have used EMDR with leaders, couples, and children to help them identify a goal and work towards those quickly.
