The Power of Community Support During Recovery from Addiction

Oct 25, 2023 | Addiction

Addiction recovery is a challenging journey, one that can be made less daunting with the warmth of community support. The role of community in recovery is immense, offering a sense of belonging, understanding, and shared experience that can pave the way towards healing.

Seek Out Sober Activities and Spaces

Firstly, seeking out sober activities and spaces is a powerful way to foster community support. Participating in activities such as tennis or volunteering for a community organization not only steer clear of triggers but also open doors to meet like-minded individuals. These spaces offer an opportunity for shared experiences, fostering connections that can make your recovery journey less arduous.

Susan Kelley from JRNY counseling says, “In early recovery, it’s vital to connect with other sober people, ideally in person. Most community support meetings in Central Indiana are based on the 12 Steps, like as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Also, I encourage you to check out Dharma Recovery, a community support meeting with a more Buddhist perspective, at JRNY Counseling on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm. Connecting directly with others who have similar experiences helps us realize we’re not alone. Also, meeting others with similar issues helps to reduce the feelings of stigma many people with substance use disorders experience.”

Lean on Friends Who Show They’re Willing to Go on the Journey with You

Secondly, lean on friends who show they’re willing to go on the journey with you. Recovery is not meant to be a solitary trek. It requires the strength of relationships and the mutual support they offer. A friend who is willing to join you on this journey understands your struggle and is patient with your process. This kind of supportive friendship can be a beacon of hope in challenging times.
“Leaning on friends and community is crucial in any recovery journey. Make sure to check in with your community regularly and ask for and provide updates and stay in open communication. You have to nurture your community if you want it to keep thriving!,” said JRNY counselor Justin Misch.

Practice Coping Strategies

Finally, practice coping strategies. As part of a community, you will learn from others who are also on a similar path. They can share their coping strategies and you can incorporate those that resonate with you. These strategies are tools that will help you handle stress, avoid relapse, and stay focused on your recovery.

The power of community support during the recovery from addiction can’t be overstated. It’s a lifeline, a source of strength, motivation, and resource to help you navigate through this challenging journey. Remember, you are not alone.
